Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter
649 serves Clermont County.
Among those services are upkeep and maintenance of its’ UH-1H “Huey”
helicopter in Union Township Park.
This serves as a Memorial to those that gave their lives in service to America
during the Vietnam War,
and is additionally used for Memorials and rallies to honor current Veterans
as well as those of all wars, past and present.
Funds are used for the upkeep and maintenance
of the helicopter as well as establishing a
funding base for a trust to maintain the helicopter site for future generations.
VVA 649 is chartered as a non-profit
organization, providing additional services to veterans of the era,
serving as an information source to schools and libraries for those seeking
first hand knowledge of Vietnam.
VVA 649 is active with shipments of items
to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq,
obtaining assistance for families of those serving our country at present, serving
as a resource,
and too frequently, a friendly shoulder to those in need,
and helping smooth the transition as returning Military reenter civilian life.
A less visible role is assisting veterans
with health care, awareness of the problems with the indiscriminate
use of Agent Orange in Vietnam and the residual, frequently fatal health problems
of veterans suffering such exposure.
Using their broad experience in documenting health hazards,
VVA has opened up it offices to committees in regard to the Gulf I
and current conflicts and aiding the recognition of long term health issues
that were acquired
by veterans in service to their country during those periods.
